The Heart of the Sauna: Choosing Between Electric and Wood-Burning Heaters

By Sauna4Soul Team 3 min read

Everything else in a sauna the wood, the cladding, the layout sets the stage. The heater is what actually makes it a sauna. At Sauna4Soul, every model can be built with either an electric heater or a wood-burning heater, and the right choice comes down to how you want your sauna ritual to feel, not which one is objectively “better.”

Electric Heaters: Precision and Convenience

For most of our installations, we fit 9kW electric heaters from Harvia, with HUUM used as an alternative depending on availability and project specification. Both are Finnish-engineered and built specifically for the demands of outdoor sauna use.

What you get with electric:

  • Set-and-forget heating. Choose your temperature, and the heater holds it no fire to manage, no fuel to load.
  • Fast, predictable warm up. A 9kW unit is sized to bring a Sauna4Soul cabin up to temperature reliably, session after session.
  • Clean operation. No smoke, no ash, no chimney to maintain just heat and steam.
  • Ideal for frequent use. If your sauna is used daily, or is part of a hotel or wellness venue with back to back guest sessions, electric is the practical choice: it’s ready exactly when you need it, every time.

Wood-Burning Heaters: Ritual and Atmosphere

For clients who want the traditional Finnish pirts experience the crackle of the fire, the smell of burning wood, the slower ceremony of building heat by hand we offer wood-burning heaters as an alternative to electric on request.

What you get with wood:

  • An authentic, sensory ritual. Lighting and tending the fire is part of the experience, not a chore to skip.
  • No electrical dependency. A wood-burning setup can go anywhere on a property, including sites without an existing power connection.
  • A deeper, more traditional heat. Many enthusiasts describe wood heat as softer and more enveloping than electric, especially once the stones are fully saturated with warmth.
  • Best for occasional, ceremonial use. If your sauna is a weekend ritual or a destination experience rather than a daily habit, the extra 60–90 minutes it takes to build the fire becomes part of the appeal rather than a drawback.

Electric vs. Wood: Which Fits Your Project?

Neither Is the “Right” Answer

We don’t push clients toward one heater type by default we size and spec whichever fits the property and how the sauna will actually be used. A boutique hotel running multiple guest sessions a day gets more value from an electric Harvia or HUUM unit that’s simply ready on demand. A private retreat or countryside property, where the sauna is a weekend event rather than a daily habit, often gets more out of the wood-fired experience.

Not sure which heater fits your project? we’ll help you spec the right heat source for your climate, usage pattern, and site.

We Time-Traveled Four Vikings to 2026 and Asked Them to Pick a Sauna. It Got Heated. Somewhere between a burning longship and a group chat, our editorial team accidentally opened a door that should have stayed closed, and four legends of the 9th century walked out of it. They were sore. They smelled like a […]
