Bjorn: You fight. You bleed a little, mostly other people’s. Then you go sit in a hot room until your brain stops screaming and your hands stop shaking and you can remember your own name again. It’s not complicated.

Leif: (long, disappointed sigh) It is not “a hot room,” Bjorn. It has never been “a hot room.” It is a ritual. You heat the stones. You pour the water. You listen to it hiss like it’s angry at you specifically. You let the steam do what steam has done since before either of us learned to hold a sword. Pirts: The Soul of Latvia’s Bathhouse Tradition

Long before “wellness” became a buzzword, Latvians already had a word for it: pirts.

For centuries, the pirts has been far more than a place to get clean. It was historically considered the cleanest space in the home where women gave birth, and where the deceased were bathed before burial. Latvian folk songs even call it “Māras pirts” or “Laimas pirts,” because, according to folk beliefs, the goddesses Māra and Laima are present in the bathhouse when new life begins. It’s no exaggeration to call it sacred. As one pirts master put it, long before Christianity arrived with the crusaders, the pirts was Latvia’s church a place that survived occupations, wars, and deportations, with a pirts still standing behind nearly every farmhouse even through the Soviet era.

So what actually happens inside?

A traditional ritual is slow by design built around at least three heating rounds that grow in length and intensity, guided by a pirtnieks, a trained bath master. The pirtnieks understands plant properties deeply, choosing herbs for their effect mugwort, for instance, valued as a natural antiseptic and calming agent. Birch or oak branches are bundled into soft whisks for the pēriens a rhythmic, full-body “whipping” that stimulates circulation and releases tension rather than causing pain. Honey is often massaged into the skin near the end, for nourishment.

The whole experience can stretch past three hours, often finishing with a plunge into ice cold water a rhythm of heat, cold, herbs, and rest that leaves people not just clean, but genuinely restored.

Why it still matters today

In a culture where the pirts invites the cleansing of body, mind, and soul through heat, steam, water, touch, plants, and song, it’s easy to see why the tradition never faded. The Latvian Pirts and Spa Association has even worked to have it recognised as official intangible cultural heritage proof that this isn’t nostalgia, it’s living culture.
