Inside the Cube: Choosing the Right Wood for Your Sauna Interior

By Sauna4Soul Team 4 min read

The wood inside your sauna does more than look good it’s what your skin touches at 80°C, what carries the scent of every session, and what has to survive years of heat and humidity cycles without warping, splintering, or fading. At Sauna4Soul, every model from the Cube Lite to our Bespoke Design line is built with that in mind, which is why we offer two tiers of interior material: a Basic selection and a LUX upgrade.

Here’s what separates them, and why the choice matters more than it might seem.

Basic Interior: Aspen or Thermo Pine

Our Basic interior package uses Aspen or Thermo Pine both proven, sauna-grade softwoods with decades of use across Nordic and European sauna building.

Aspen is naturally light in tone, smooth to the touch, and stays comfortably cool even on hot benches and backrests. It has no resin to ooze under heat, doesn’t splinter, and keeps a clean, bright look that suits a minimalist Scandinavian interior.

Thermo Pine goes a step further: the wood is thermally modified using only heat and steam no chemicals which deepens its colour to a warm golden brown and significantly improves dimensional stability. The treatment reduces moisture absorption, meaning less swelling, shrinking, and movement over years of use in a high-humidity environment.

Both options deliver everything a well-built sauna interior needs: durability, comfort against skin, and a clean Scandinavian aesthetic at a more accessible price point.

LUX Interior: Thermo Aspen, Thermo Pine Radiata, or Thermo Ayous

For clients who want their sauna interior to be a design statement in itself, our LUX tier offers Thermo Aspen, Thermo Pine Radiata, or Thermo Ayous.

Thermo Aspen combines all the comfort benefits of natural aspen low thermal conductivity, smooth grain, splinter-free surface — with the enhanced stability and richer, warmer tone that thermal modification brings. It’s our most requested upgrade for clients who want a cohesive, elevated look without straying from a familiar palette.

Thermo Pine Radiata brings a more distinctive grain pattern and a rich, warm tone that reads as intentionally premium. Thermal modification suits radiata pine particularly well, producing a board that’s exceptionally stable and moisture-resistant ideal for a sauna that will see heavy, regular use.

Thermo Ayous is the boldest of the three: a low density hardwood that takes thermal treatment beautifully, resulting in a warm, luxurious finish with wide, clean boards and minimal visible knots. It’s the choice for clients who want their interior walls and ceiling to feel like a single, continuous, furniture-grade surface.

All three LUX woods share the core requirements every sauna material must meet they stay cool to the touch, resist moisture, and won’t splinter or off-gas at high temperatures while offering a noticeably richer color, grain, and overall finish than the Basic tier.

You never believe what happening last night. Never.

We Time-Traveled Four Vikings to 2026 and Asked Them to Pick a Sauna. It Got Heated. Somewhere between a burning longship and a group chat, our editorial team accidentally opened a door that should have stayed closed, and four legends of the 9th century walked out of it. They were sore. They smelled like a […]
